- Two of Decatur High School Band Members attend the National Trumpet Competition
Two of our own, Michael Covington and Daniel Haddock, were selected to attend and compete in the National Trumpet Competition in Washington, DC. Although still relative babes in comparison to us parents, these two are veterans now in this competition. This is an extremely prestigious event and both young men participated in several qualifying rounds before selection. There were fewer than 50 gifted musicians from the country selected for the semifinal round of live competition and DHS was represented by 2 of the total and this is a very big honor. Michael had the opportunity to serve as a teaching participant in some of the variety of sessions outside the competitive rounds.
Both young men are to be congratulated for their achievement, the dedication and countless hours of practice that allow them to represent DHS and Alabama in this event. We are fortunate to have two such gifted fellows in our ranks and proud of how they represented us in the event. Atta boy guys!
- Winter Guard 2009 - State Champions
Our winter guard also represented DHS in high fashion by capturing 2nd place in the southeast guard championships this weekend in Nashville. The group missed first overall in their division by only one-tenth of a point and it must have been a heck of a squad and show to best them because apparently our group knocked ‘em out with their performance.
With this finish, our group are the official, and reigning Alabama State Champs for 2009 in their division! Rumor has it that the tremendous support and encouragement shown to the group on Thursday prior to the championship performance. Ok, so I just wanted to throw that in as a feel-good and thanks again to those that came out. The real deal is oddly similar to good news item #1 in that it was the dedication, countless hours of practice, leadership, instruction and uncanny desire to be the best they could that allowed the team to achieve this level. Interesting how that works! Way 2 go guard, 2009 State Champs!
